There's little peace in a near-future Diablo Valley suburb, where the news blares on about global flooding, solar flares and grisly chainsaw murder-suicides, and where two splintered families turn to furtive sexuality, lyrical flights of fancy, and even stranger things to keep afloat. Such is the world of Jennifer Phang's illustrious debut film HALF-LIFE, which earned rave reviews when it premiered at Sundance last year; as Stephen Farber of Hollywood Reporter wrote, it reminds us of why Sundance was launched and why it continues to have value.
Pam Wu is no carefree Valley girl–when she's not launching herself off the roof for fun, she sullenly sweeps the floors of an airport hangar that's filled with memories of her beloved father, who took off in his small plane one day never to return. Little brother Tim is also in his own world, while the children's mother abandons herself to feverish sex with a younger live-in lover who has his eyes on Pam. Family dinners soon become family confrontations, but these are no ordinary times, not with Tim's possible telekinetic powers, and the family's lyrical (and literal) flights of fancy. Meanwhile, in another part of the valley, another family has problems of its own….
"An Asian AMERICAN BEAUTY set against the backdrop of global decay and illuminated by splashes of WAKING LIFE-style animation" (Variety), Jennifer Phang's debut feature potently captures the teen angst, family yearning and end-of-days foreboding of REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE and DONNIE DARKO.
