This 10-minute documentary presented by Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) follows the stories—the successes, hardships, and hopes—of three Asian American immigrants in Silicon Valley. For generations, Asian American immigrants have settled in Silicon Valley in search of economic and other life opportunities. Since that time, these ethnic communities have shaped and steered the innovation, development, and technological growth that uniquely characterize the region today. While making significant contributions and achievements, Asian American immigrants have continued to face institutional barriers. Acquiring access to culturally appropriate resources, developing language skills while working multiple jobs, finding affordable quality health care, and navigating the process of citizenship, are just some of the obstacles experienced by present-day Asian American immigrants in Silicon Valley. Despite these struggles, many are working to make a positive impact in the local community. Among them are Nenita, a Filipina hotel worker campaigning for change in the workplace; Andy, a Chinese businessman volunteering as a financial counselor in his spare time; and Iris, a Vietnamese social worker and activist striving to build a community where all can succeed. For a region that has thrived on the ideas and labor of immigrants past and present, supporting these populations remains vital toward improving the health and growth of Silicon Valley. This piece explores community strength through the empowerment of immigrants, and prompts civic and political action toward making change. Followed by a presentation by AACI.
